In the 80s and 90s there was a revolving door for black leather clad heavy metal musicians for Black Sabbath.
I remember feeling that Iommi shouldn't have continued using the name Black Sabbath.
But I don't remember feeling utter contempt for him like I feel for Rossi.
I like these two bands equally, but there's something about the way Rossi has conducted himself that really touched a nerve.

I'm not so sure that Tony Iommi possesses the ego that Rossi has, which, lets face it, is the size of a gas giant. He's systematically achieved his goal of being the big chief by getting rid of JC and Alan. And ultimately by Rick's demise he now IS Status Quo.
I still find it hard to fathom how my respect and admiration for someone can turn into complete and utter disdain 😕

Yep. Whitesnake too, and Rainbow. (Ask @bluehighway)!

For me,the difference is that although there were personnel changes in Black Sabbath, the philosophy stayed the same, albeit the quality of the music was nowhere near the standard of Ozzy/Dio era Sabbath. Members of Status Quo were systematically shown the exit door to be replaced by unquestioning “yes men”,in order for Francis Rossi to play second rate A.O.R under the Status Quo banner. The general public view Black Sabbath as living legends but obviously now view Quo as a band that has long outstayed it’s welcome.

All those 70s rock bands were revolving doors, Sabbath, Purple, Whitesnake, Rainbow, it was hard to keep track of who was in which band and when but the two main egos at the time were Ritchie and Tony Iommi, in Purple Ritchie was somewhat reigned in by Jon Lord but once he left and set up Rainbow it was his way or the highway as i found out several times. Tony was ruthless in keeping Sabbath on the road too but at heart was and still is a really lovely guy. Some of the people who came and went though were treated incredibly badly in all those bands.

Ronnie Dio came across as a great guy from what I have seen of him but evidently their were clashes of ego between him and Tony during his Black Sabbath times.

Ronnie was one of the nicest guys ever and one of my closest friends right up to his death but he was very driven and knew where he wanted to go musically and what worked for him. To say there were clashes between him and Ritchie is putting it mildly, it's what led to Ronnie quitting Rainbow that he wouldn't go down Ritchie's hit driven pop style. The same was true in Sabbath although he and Tony didn't have the fall outs he did with Ritchie, there was always a mutual respect between the two of them. Respect is a word that doesn't feature in Ritchie's dictionary.
