Definitely worth watching, I thought. If you already know a lot about Scientology, it doesn't reveal much new. But we do hear from some very senior, ex-Scientologists and one of them helps to re-enact what goes on behind closed doors. And I found it fascinating.
I gather that Going Clear is the most informative doc on the cult.

Yep, I did. What did you think of it? It's the first time i've really studied it all so was good from that perspective in that it seriously piqued my curiosity. Have since done some pretty heavy homework. I'd imagine it would be an interesting slant on things for someone with more background, seeing Louis actively being an SP. But what a fascinating thing....what humans are capable of, and in this case actually carry out. Staggering levels of deceit, delusion and deception. Though i'm sure they believe it. I read somewhere that it all came about from a bet. Hubbard was bet by a friend that he couldn't start a global cult based on a scifi novel, or something. Whether that's true or not, i don't know.

If it makes any mention of Tom Cruise, it'll be a waste of time.

They're all weird. Scientology is weird. Weird but cunning. Sometime ago, when we still had a local free newspaper, there was a competition in it for kids to win sets of Hubbard's Sci-Fi books. This raised my suspicions and I made enquiries as to who was promoting this and dealing with the entries. Turned out to be a very simple way for scientologists to gain the names and addresses of teenagers interested in Sci-Fi. It was scrapped after my intervention.

And yes, it is nothing but a scam to get at people's cash. One thing that came out of the Louis Theroux film, is that members buy their why up the hierarchy of Scientology but there is no upper limit, ie, they will never buy their way to the top. And the sinister side of Scientology are those who do the day to day work for them, have miserable sounding lives: you don't get that from this documentary but I've seen personal accounts on other docs. And if they do manage to leave, they are have no property, personal effects with which to rebuild their lives. Its a nasty cult and nothing more.

I just watched it and there were some very good scenes played by ‘the actors’ recreating aspects of the cult which explain how certain people can be led into the trap of believing it’s power. I watched a program, just the other night, on the building of the Nazi party and ultimate power it had over people. The vulnerability of humans can be tapped into.
