I think he said that in the context the time, and feeling the band needed to toughen up the sound and that they were well equipped to do that. Clearly the ethos of doing that came from the FF - so I'm not sure he literally meant that CQ are a much better band than the FF per se.
Plus he went on in more recent times, especially when the FF had got back together, to clearly state his preference for what they had done and hoped for more

"I think the current lineup is a much better band than the original lineup, even though the original lineup was special. We want to introduce the rough edges to this lineup. We really want the next album to be back to basics-" The basics being Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan recorded at IPC studios by Damon Lyon-Shaw
Back to being Status Quo without actually being Status Quo then?
I always enjoyed this bit in CQ interviews the "It's all so much better now but we can't actually give any example of these line ups being able to stand up to anything done by Status Quo pre 1982 live or otherwise" Would Status Quo,not using FF anymore it's Status Quo and that's it,have
Took R1 to court Appeared in Coronation Street Embarked on a tour of pubs Played Brentwood fcuking sports club
All this shit they kept spouting CQ being anywhere near as successful or as good as Status Quo is bollocks.
