Thanks FW - I watched both vids and got goosebumps as soon as the FF started which I didn't expect. (I know that sounds odd but I've heard these a lot. But I suspect it was due to hearing it after the CQ version.)
I thought even Francis looked to be having more genuine fun playing Oh Baby at the reunion gig. Rick is for sure. In the first one he seems to be having trouble feeling the vibe and he goes to the audience to "get sent" as he called it.
The CQ version is also 1 minute faster and that loses the groove. Its too sharp, polished whereas its actually a lazy, gloopy, sensuous number.

Yeah of course it's easy to create that rocker image, it's not rocket science. Once you've got the means to be faster, louder and higher it's a piece of piss, especially with the backing of an army of admirers. Life is simple, and probably a bit superficial and unfulfilling. I think Francis' comments are being deliberately misunderstood as if to mean Rick didn't want to be that guy...of course he did, he loved it. AND it helped him escape his demons. Bonus! Francis means down down deeper n down there was a different Rick, one that was probably killed off by Rick Parfitt the rock star. I've just finished reading Patty's book "Laughing All Over The World" again, and she talks of a massive shift in Rick's behaviour just when the success of Piledriver hit and the money started seriously coming in. And at that time a massive rift between Parfitt and Rossi occurred, from which they never recovered. Who knew? I wouldn't have guessed shit happened quite that early on.... What a load of bollocks. I don't think any bollocks has been spoken. I think Francis is probably romanticising a bit about the "other Rick" as life brings out different emphases (emphasisis?) in people's lives, but they don't change entirely. Rick was complaining long before Piledriver that Francis had other best friends. (Bob, mainly.) Rick was a bit needy in his Rickish way. It wouldn't surprise me if they had a blow up. Sudden influxes of money also are explosive in relationships. Also unpopular as this idea is, Patty has probably known Rick longer than anyone else now around and commenting. Was this around the gtime that Rick told Marietta that he probably shouldn't have got married because the "talent" (ie free sex from fans and groupies) was getting much better now that they were more successul? Rick - nothing if not honest!

I could see someone else over the far side of the hall who was, too It never comes across quite the way it does on the album, the sarcasm gets a bit lost in the mix But hey it's got both guys singins and two fabulous riffs. we are unexpectedly pinned down today due to the Mr's manflu ... I should put on one of the FF dvds ... cheer me up!

And I'm sure the CQ are better live - at least with Rick - than the youtube vids show. I listened to those 2 tracks with my headphones on to improve the quality. Sounds like a good plan re: FF dvds. I hope you both feel better soon. Its a damp squib of a day down in SE England. So whilst I'm in good health, I'm doing quiet things indoors.

Oh I'm OK I had it last week, he caught it from me! I'm always tring to keep him away from "bugs" (he has asthma) and now I'm the plague carrier! No idea where it came from. I'm watching 2014 Dublin and being reminded that the most important thing about the FF for me was getting Alan back in front of the mic again. I love Rhino but I never stopped missing Alan. Spud wasn't part of my live heritage (I met him once, he was being cheerful and really nice to fans and was a nice guy) and he's not a singer and I'm not a drummer and have quite simplistic requirements for being a great drummer (Bonzo or Ginger, basically) ... but Alan was part of my live experience from the start and then he went. They were still great, but they lost many of Alan's songs and his vocals and you can't make up for that. Then round comes In My Chair and who is that grizzled old guy with the drawl singing away and jogging gently at the mic and HE IS STILL RIPPING MY ATTENTION AWAY FROM MY LAPTOP SCREEN ... something about that voice. In My Chair was a major turning point for me with Quo, it's not necessarily my "fave song" on any given day of the week but there's a reason (or two or three) why it was the first Quo single I rushed out and bought on one hearing. No idea what that reason is, but it's still there, whatever it was. It is actually a very good song, despite being understated. Other people have sung it, but only Francis can really sing it. It doesn't even remind me of him in particular, his vocals just inhabit the song. On Little Lady now ... go that Rick! Yes and really the blue denim is more Rick than the black leather, lovely as black leather is. He did look a bit as if he'd been stuffed into it the first time round. Oh sh*t it's MOTT now. NO!! Excuse me ... joining in ...

Its a personal thing of course but I'm not sure I would call Oh Baby 'sensuous'. However yes it does indeed benefit from being played just that fraction slower. It was created with a laconic swagger to it.
CQ were quite good live at one time. Glastonbury 09 is a good example of that. But they had an extra edge to them then because they wanted to prove a point to a festival crowd quite a few of which, at the time, would not appreciate what they were still capable of (if they were in the mood to up a gear)
Still nothing quite like the FF, but bearing in mind the set they played at Glastonbury that year, it hadn't (yet) become set in granite stone for the years that were to follow. It was one time that the modern Quo did themselves justice with any cringe factor totally absent. They enjoyed themselves, but managed to do it without being a circus act.

I was never sure about that jacket that Rick wore at the reunions. It also looked like it was having a pressure cooker effect on him The denim definitely suited him to a tee, bless him. Sad thoughts flood back...

Sad thoughts flood back... I think he felt self conscious. He was a bit overweight again and didn’t have his long hair.

I cannot understand why CQ took Oh Baby (and Blue Eyed Lady) and parodied those and brought them down to the same level as the general karaoke in their set - as the return to 'day job' follow-up to the FF reunion. The precedent set by the FF reunion(s) was enormous and the fans were buzzing with long pent up static after the gigs. It required extremely careful thought to avoid a cliff edge after those heights
But when bargain basement route one to the wallet is the only priority then such thought was whistling in the wind.
Choosing to do this at a critical time was surely the biggest own goal and the most stupidest wrong turn of many very stupid wrong turns this band made in recent years.
Why have they/did they never play their OWN back catalogue properly?! doh Watching those 2 videos and Francis, with FF, also is clearly at a higher level than he is with CQ. I absolutely agree with your reference to their playing of back catalogue. Vey odd that Francis seems to dismiss it in favour of nostalgic Quo which he hates but which FFplayed much better which he thought was crap but thinks it's ok wit CQ... does that make sense? Yes it does - its all part of this thing he has about the past being firmly in the past. Despite the fact that his way of evaluating it makes no sense

I hate admitting this and only two people know this but(and without saying the word) I have had issues. I often wake up and feel it's me against the world. But, once I pick up a guitar and play music, everything is OK with the world...I know from listening and watching, Rick was in his element when playing the stuff he wanted to...There was no false personality there. You can see it from the look in his eyes. Sure, he obviously loved being in a band and it was an escape for him but, he was clearly into the music and it's the sort of music he loved. I saw footage of him playing Oh Baby with Leon and he fucking hated it. You can clearly see he wasn't liking it We all know he loved the music and being the Rocker on stage (Deep down I think Francis does too. He is evidently embarressed by it). However it's off stage where the main problem is being this "Rock Star". Look at his first heart problem. He regarded it as a service and went tearing off down the road again at 100mph. At home Lyndsay said he was a great dad and relaxed. It was when he was on the road that the problems were happening and not behaving like the real Rick. Putting on this front for people as being a good laugh and having a drink when in reality he should not have been drinking at all.

Why have they/did they never play their OWN back catalogue properly?! doh Because much of what has been recorded in the last 30+ years is regarded as product. Songs from RTYD/UTI/HT/TPAOY/ISOTFC are seen as old hat and Francis exercised his demons in playing many of these he couldn't (for whatever reason) with Quo through his solo tour. The only chance of change is if the band record new material. With Francis' complete detachment from rock music and the public's apathy towards Quo doing lighter/experimental Aquostic-style music, I honestly can't see that happening. Mr and Mrs Smith don't seem to care about the set for electric gigs, so the band could get away with near enough the exact same set this year again. Music sales are so pitiful that if a live DVD were to be released next year it would again turn a profit and make the Top 40, and Quo would gloat about it just like they're doing now with LNOTE. Sadly, that's all that matters nowadays. Bragging rights. It's also all that CQ fans have got to support their claims that the band are as good as they've ever been. "They're pulling in the crowds..." "They had a Top 10 album..." The deliberate underpromotion of the FF and insistence from Porter that there was "NO DEMAND FOR THE FF" further warped minds and created the charade that the FF were somehow unimportant. The management may think they can get away glorifying the current lineup by deluding people with "facts" but plenty of us know the way the music industry (and the media in general) works.

Sad thoughts flood back... A couple of weeks after the FF reunion tour 2013 finished, CQ toured Oz and Rick wore the same leather jacket. It was very hot in the Hordern Pavilion Sydney and I was getting hot just in a t-shirt. Rick was giving it all as usual but sweating like a pig, very red faced and I was expecting him to spontaniously combust especially with his heart history. That leather jacket though.. phew...I bet they gave it it's own room on the tour bus.

I personally welcomed Francis exercising his demons with his solo tour. Most of the songs chosen were given good treatment by his band and there were a number selected from the CQ catalogue itself that I particularly like. So no problem at all from me there. I hoped, somewhat in vain, it might inspire CQ themselves, but that was to expect too much...
As posted elsewhere, there is no chance of this LNOTE band playing anything new. Its karaoke all the way to the finish. Whenever that is.
