Funny to look back to their beginnings and most of the early stuff, The Spectres, is Alan on lead vocals. Once Rick came in, this seemed to change dramatically. I wonder if Francis considers "Spare Parts" unbalanced seeing as Rick's doing most of the lead vocals, and Alan none. Alan was the first to form a songwriting partnership with Bob Young, but it seems Francis put an end to that. So by the turn of the decade, the balance had been established that anything that wasn't mostly Francis was unbalanced. Couple that with Alan being sacked then re-instated in 1969, and you can see that his presence wasn't massively wanted. And then, as they admit themselves, it was a constant power struggle to get their own quotas of songs onto albums.
Probably all as bad as each other, to be fair. But had Alan not been re-instated, that would have removed some of that competitiveness.
Just stating the obvious really.

Best album by any band, any time. Slow Train, Lonely Man, Backwater/Just take me, Drifting away, all brilliant. And... the best cover design of all their albums. When Francis says he doesn't like the album (did he really say that?) it only proves he doesn't have a clue that he wrote one of the best rock songs of all times... Slow Train. But to be honest, I just think he's a bit jealous knowing fans love this album so much, an album not dominated by his songwriting... He's just a man like you and me, flesh and blood, with all our weaknesses. He's not a god. (Once there was a time I thought he was! ) Looong, loooong ago!

Alan does one on Spare Parts, "Your Just what I was Looking for Today" though Rick sings the bridge part.

If they ever had the bottle they could release a collection of this stuff Lonely Man Unspoken Words A Year Blue For You All The Reasons Ease Your Mind Too Close To The Ground Gerdundula And It's Better Now Where I Am Some of their best music in this lot.I actually think that this band and management, despite utterances to the contrary, don't actually know what the fans like. . And with possibly the addition of Over And Done perhaps?
