I think I read somewhere a few years ago that they rehearsed a new set that Rhino (+ Rick?) put together that was more rock-based, but - according to Francis - it bombed on the first night and so they reverted to the usual set from the 2nd night onwards. Did it actually bomb at all in reality?
How on earth did the FF get through the barrier of not playing together for 30 yrs, unfortunate health handicaps that could not be mitigated, and playing a sequence of songs, various of which were unfamiliar live...and played in a sequence not known to 'flow' (as the CQ excuse goes along with)
Francis, or anyone else, had far more justification for worrying about a set bombing in those circumstances. It didn't obviously, it/they succeeded gloriously, despite Francis criticism afterwards.
That isn't the point anyway.
I'm cynical to the point of thinking that excuses are made up as they go along. That highlighted post doesn't wash at all with me.
I'm blaming the message itself of course here, and certainly not the messenger
As you know, we both agree on the set list. I added the "according to Francis" bit purposely to make the distinction that it was just his opinion that it bombed and no-one else's. According to the people who were there that night, it was a great set and it would've rocked like hell once it'd had a chance to settle in. I think Rhino has also said pretty much the same. Someone on here might have been there and can remember the set - I don't actually think it was that extraordinary!
I would imagine that Francis was right out of his comfort zone and when he says "People were looking at the stage and thinking 'what the hell is this?'" it says more about him than it does about the set or even the crowd who were there. Clearly, from the quote he's made in the fanclub mag, he's still carrying that 'horror' to this day.
I think most of us hoped that, even if the FF didn't continue in some guise after the reunion, Francis would have seen the reaction of the crowd, enjoyed the freshness of playing new songs and then injected a bit of life into CQ's set. Sadly, he seems to have taken the opposite approach and couldn't wait to dump the FF and get back to the mind-numbing ease of the other band.

Yes that did happen (not sure it bombed though). I can't remember the set but there were quite a few changes It still doesn't justify not making 4 changes or so. Not much to ask is it? I'm now missing my 2nd UK tour in a row , and it isn't bothering me. I know I'd really enjoy it if I was there, but I just don't feel enthusiasm for CQ since the FF gigs, and the static set certainly doesn't help! I haven't seen Quo live since Matt's supposed last gig at the O2 in 2012 (although he then went and toured Oz with them!). I did go to the Radio 2 Aquostic show, but sadly I'd bought the ticket before the album was released and I didn't realise what a pile of shite it would be! I also got tickets for Rochester this year, but it was cancelled at the last minute. I don't have any interest in seeing them again, unless they radically change the set.

I do see what you're getting at Catlady. But what about the audiences for the two band line-ups? For the FF tours there were plenty of loyal fans who only joined after 86 - I met and chatted to some on the way home. But they were more than simply casuals who turn up for the hits. And the old Quo army was out in force. They could do no wrong on that first tour. And then when they nailed or "killed it" as they say now, it gave them confidence to do it even better on the 2nd tour. I don't know if the excuses are made up without knowing what proportion of the fans are loyal long time fans like yourself or fans that simply go to the live gigs but never listen to Quo otherwise. If the majority are the latter, that could be why they play what they play. I wonder why BEL or OB bombed on the last winter tour when the FF fans loved it and probably would enjoy it played by CQ. I don't think it was simply the playing style - though some will argue that. I wonder if its because they do sound different to more popular hits.
