Somebody bought me the cd for christmas which i've now listened to in full 3 times. Verdict? i can't even say "its ok i suppose"...cos i don't think it is. Most of it i just found very boring. Nothing on it "grabs" me, at all. If i compare it to quid pro quo, which again, i wasn't a MASSIVE fan of, but it knocks spots of backbone imo. The track "backing off", is the only one that i'd listen to twice, and even that would just sit as an "ok ish" track on QPQ. Maybe its the fact that they still insist on calling it "status quo" is what i can't get past, but if it were just a Francis Rossi solo album, then i guess one could try to listen from a different perspective. If i'm honest, i probably decided that i'd "had my fill" of quo and was perfectly satisfied when i exited the Wolverhampton civic hall in March 2013 (FF reunion gig), that was it in my eyes, they'd come full circle, no more left to do. I didn't go to the FF gigs in 2014, although i could tell from the videos that JC was a lot tighter on that tour.

So it's back to square one thinking shall I get it or shan't I?

So it's back to square one thinking shall I get it or shan't I? I got it for Christmas. I wanted to make a review, but when I start something like that, I end up with a wall of text. But I enjoyed the album. It's a bit different than the previous ones. I noticed the lack of Rick, but I still enjoyed the songs.

I had the basic album on release as my hopes were not high and didn't see the need for the bonus tracks.
We went to see my 85 year old dad at Christmas and low and behold he had bought me the bonus track version. He had obviously been paying attention to breakfast TV or something. He even knew about Rossi's guitar going up for auction!
Well the album has been played on almost every car journey since. My teenage daughter had been a bit indifferent to the album initially as she couldn't think of Quo without Rick, much like me really. Though suddenly I noticed she was listening more closely in the car rather than just staring at her phone! Now it is my daughter who wants to put the album on in the car. You can have too much of a good thing though!
Tracks such as 'Better Take Care' 'Falling Off The World', 'Waiting For A Women', 'I Wanna Run Away With You' and 'Backing Off' are regularly played. The guitar solo in 'Better Take Care' is a slice of brilliance.
Quo were at their very best in the Frantic era and full of invention but possibly it is because I hadn't expected much with this album that it has grown on me. Whether it is deemed to be Quo or not Quo, purely from the memorable melodies, lyrics and production quality, it has surprised me as didn't think they had anything more to give or say.

I agree with this all very much. It has surprised me how regularly I still play the album. I play it once every week at least, sometimes more. The only track I skip is Crazy Crazy. For the rest I play them all, especially Waiting for a woman, Cut me some slack, I see you're in some trouble, Backing off, Falling off the world and Face the music. Like you I didn't expect much of it beforehand but it turned out quite well. Of course it's not FF, it couldn never be. But I prefer this above anything that came after 1982 except for UTI and QPQ which I also still really enjoy.

I haven't listened to it in a wee while. It's not a bad album but the overall consensus seems to be - and with which I probably agree - is that there are no stand-out tracks. No real highlights. Nothing unmissable. But nothing that I don't sort of quite like. But this is a Quo album. I shouldn't 'quite like' it. At least a few tracks should blow me away. It's not their best since Never Too Late; very far from it. But it's certainly not their poorest effort either. See what I mean? Sort of middling. I'm probably being very picky but I feel I've earned the right

I'm probably being very picky but I feel I've earned the right I do see what you mean Mortified. In some respects I quite like the fact that it is consistent in it's own little way, in that it's an album that I can listen to from start to finish and that has been a rare thing with Quo albums of the last few decades. Not having to use the skip button endlessly to focus on any standout tracks. A sense of completeness that Quo albums of the very long past used to have, even if not ground breaking material. The album doesn't shake the earth, but for a band that I thought were essentially over, studio wise, it has been an enjoyable experience and if it all ends tomorrow then 'Backbone' isn't a bad way to finish. For Rossi it must have been a case of... 'where do you go song wise where you haven't been before after 40 plus years in the business?', but somehow they have a fresh sounding album with Backbone. I'm particularly drawn to the sound of the album, as Quo albums have been hit n' miss in the production department for a long time.

It's still getting plenty of airplay from me. In my opinion a lot of good tracks on there, don't need the skip button, still enjoying the album.

I played it the other day after not listening for a while. Here's how I would describe it:
When I listen to QPQ every four or five months, there's always a 'wow, I forgot that was on here' moment which I very much enjoy. On Backbone there's none of that. It's all just okay. "Waiting for a woman" is dreadful, but otherwise most of it is pleasant, bland soft rock, with a few high points.

Good to see you here on the dark side, where methinks the album was better recieved than on the other board. Im not sure there is a consensus. Been lots of us on here that loved it, quite a few saying "best since" etc We can't be objective, we all love SQ too much for that. I'm alert to the possibility that my low expectations resulted in higher pleasure For me it's a consistent listen. The songs fit together so well they deserve to be listened to together. The title track wasn't a great single but works really well in its place. I prefer it to QPQ but that album has much higher highs Anyway mate forget bb, we have gotten ahead of ourselves. I'm still trying to work out why you loved tpaoy so much, I'll never forget how you defended it to death 😆😆👍🍺

I'm still trying to work out why you loved tpaoy so much, I'll never forget how you defended it to death 😆😆👍🍺 That's what I was trying to say, although you managed it in 6 words Higher highs on other Quo albums. I like that. The technical amongst us all point out how well produced the album is; how less "compressed" the sound is. I don't actually get any of that. I don't seem to have the ear for it. It doesn't "sound" any better or worse to me than most other Quo albums. So I guess it's the arrangements of the songs I notice more. Like most 'modern' popular music, I find it to be a little too lyrical and less musical. But I'm a dinosaur; I get that. As for the .... Party album, it always seemed to just hit the spot for me. It still does. Not even the band liked it! Which probably just proves that my taste is up me ar$e
