So the modern thing isn't reviews; it's people "reacting" to things (Youtube it if you don't believe me folks). Having not heard the Bula Quo album for about 5 years, I decided to give it a listen this morning, so here's my reaction to it in 2019.
Looking Out for Caroline - Ploddy plod plod passable plod plod.
GoGoGo - By far the best song of the album, heavy sound, two solos, good bit of backing ambiance but not too much. I'd argue better than some tracks on Backbone, and would probably be in my top 10 best Quo songs of the past 25 years.
Run and Hide (The Gun Song) - Avera
Running Inside My Head - If there's one thing I dislike on a Quo song, it's unnecessary naff backing vocals. "na na na na, na na na na na".
Mystery Island - If you're too young to know what playing a 45rpm Vinyl album at 33rpm sounds like, this long should give you the effect.....
All That Money - Good nod along track, not exceptional, but there are worse things to be listening to.
Never Leave a Friend Behind, Brie, Emmental, Edam, Gorgonzola, Cheddar, Red Leicester, there's a pattern here.
Fiji Time - A nice catchy number that I've always quite liked, although sadly let down sadly by the blatant plagiarism.
Bula Bula Quo (Kua Ni Lega) - No idea, turned off just before it started.
Observation: I think the actual production/levels on this album, and use of backing instruments, is quite good on this album. Far better than something like the Aquostic albums where the backing orchestra was chronically overused.

Oops, apologies for not doing a full reaction to "Run and Hide", think I nodded off.

YOu cannot simply pick a "Quo"-album and react to it. Victor will have your hide for this.

I liked running inside my head when this came out
Tried to listen to it recently but this and some other Quo albums no longer available to stream. Couldn't be arsed getting the CD out 😊
Also like all that money, so very Rick
Album may have been better received if the reunions hadn't happened.

Not an album I will ever enjoy i'm afraid. Only track I think is ok is All that money. The rest is pretty much forgettable for me. RW, you may have a point about the reception of the album conected to the reunions...but still...i don't think I would have liked it anymore even if the reunions hadn't happen.

After the sheer glory of ff.... we had "lite" on telly promoting the single, complete with its embarassing nonsense start (a bula bula Quo... a bula bula Quo") At that moment I imagined thousands of fans screaming f off at the band. This was reflected in the sqmb, which of course the band closed down It was never going to be a good album, but without the reunions I doubt it would have aroused any passions. It's timing made it hated. Compared to what we'd witnessed live, this was depressingly pointless, not even a shadow of what could have been.

Oh I do agree that it coming after the reunions made it even worse. Don't even remind me of that "A bulla bula Quo" ! But that's what I mean, reunions or not, I was never gonna like that anyway.

On principle I didn't buy it and I never will.
Quo really hit the shitty end of rock bottom with that stupid money grabbing excercise.
Thankfully since then they have recovered some kudos.

OK, bit weird, but I like the album. The association with the movie - pretty much the worst movie ever made! - taints it hugely. But I like it more than Backbone, for example. So as a stand alone (i.e. without c-list actors getting in the way), it's pretty good. Not sure what ska has to do with the south seas but I love the track for all that. Should have been a "smash summer hit" played at all good Radio 1 'fun' days out. If there are any fun days out with that lot. Maybe just before Clean Bandit come on. Take away the taste

All That Money is a pretty good tune. GoGoGo easily the best, really, really good stuff. Bula Quo is catchy and pleasant, as long as you don't pretend it's Status Quo. The rest sucks.
