German singer & songwriter Matthias Reim released his new album MR20 with a very special track called „Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin“ with the melody of Matchstick Men. The song is about his love for 70‘s rock and named all his favourite bands he liked to party in 1977. At the end he also named Status Quo... maybe have a listen and let me know what you think about this track.
Cheers!

Thanks. Enjoyed that.
The Pictures of Matchstick Men link influence/melody is there but in a way that it is almost its own song.
Although in this case the original writer is recognise/credited in modern music many writers are almost not aware that the song they are creating is that melody that has been buried in there subconscious but actually someone else's work.
When I listened to Backbone on its release I was aware of this a few times and in one case in particular, a song that is being raved on by fans of the current band, the melody of an old song is very obvious to me and I double checked this with the original and the many cover versions and, as with the song above, the influence/melody and structure was clear, in any case to my mind. Plagiarism? Time will tell if others hear this also and are bothered, but probably will never hear the song so it will not become an issue!
