Thought id start a thread for this as over the next 24hrs or so i guess most who want to hear it will have done, im currently on my 3rd listen to it - before i go on i have to say my era is,was & always will be the ff era but thats never stopped me listening to or buying the later stuff as well as going to the live shows. Waiting For A Woman - Have to say this is a very dull nondescript opener for the album imo, just a laid back gentle shuffle that never seems to rise above bang average imo - whoever decided it should open the album want flogging! Cut Me Some Slack - Most will have heard this by now as several live versions have appeared, much better, upbeat decent rocker which shouldve opened the album Liberty Lane - Again most have heard this so you like it or you dont, personally i think it rocks along nicely good track I See Your In Some Touble - Mid paced song nice honky tonk piano from AB - not keen on the "sounds so funny" backing vocal Backing Off - Not sure about this one, certain bits of it remind me of Accident Prone? or maybe thats just me again the backing vocals seem to spoil the song I Wanna Run Away With You - Another track most have heard personally i like it & its got an old school type feel to it Better Take Care - My current favourite another John David song ( he pens a catchy tune this guy) i hear a likeness to Sweet Home Alabama on this song i really like it (all you Rhino haters - he does backing vocals ) Backbone - An ok modern day Quo song - again those backing vocals though! Falling Off The World - Like this song similar to CMSS an upbeat rocker nothing to dislike Get Out Of My Head - Ritchie Malones debut on lead vocal & its pretty good its a fast paced, rocks along nicely & a decent vocal Running Out Of Time - Not a bad track to end the album quite poppy but theres not much to dislike in all honesty Bonus Tracks Crazy - Very FR solo to my ears little bit of an irish type thing that Rossi seems to love its ok but couldnt see how it would fit on the album Face The Music - Decent tune & probably shouldve been on the album proper As i say on my 3rd listen my opinion may change but id give it a solid 7 possible 8/10 theres no track that i really dont like other than Waiting For A Woman which is just a strange choice. The haters will hate but its 2019 not 1972 so it is what it is & to my ears its just a good pop/rock album that makes yer toe tap & head nod - whats not to like

I do find it patronising to suggest that people who aren’t keen on what Status Quo do are stuck in a time warp. Maybe they just aren’t keen on average pop rock. Take Iron Maiden still turning out albums that their fan base love and that they love. That can challenge some of their best work still.

"This album is dedicated to the memory of Rick Parfitt OBE (1948 - 2016)" on the black last page of the booklet. I love this one!

Not sure at any point in my post did i say anyone was stuck in a timewarp?? my only mentions of the past were that the ff era is,was & always be my favourite era & its 2019 not 1972, if that can be mistaken for saying people are stuck in a timewarp then i apologise for suggesting that, its my honest opinion of the album after 3 listens & i look forward to hearing other peoples opinions - which i wont criticise or pick faults with as that wasnt the idea of the post.

Let's keep this thread to opinions about the album and avoid old arguments. Will be genuinely interesting to hear what people think. I'll be listening tonight.

Well I have given it a listen.
My initial thoughts.
I can see why they opened the album with Waiting for a woman, sadly the first 20 seconds of the song is the best thing about it. Do I like it... not much. Could have been on any album since Back to back.
Cut me some slack, starts with a decent riff, but goes nowhere. And here is the real problem with the album. The vocals are just nothing special, they are to me just there. The solos not bad but short.
Liberty lane. Is alright. No more no less. Could easily have been on Thirsty work. Its just so nice.
I see you're in trouble. Its pretty annoying after just one listen.
Backing off... really starting to be bored by this now. Another song that could have been recorded in the later 80s or 90s. Whatever happened to Rossi's voice. The production on this is almost painful.
I wanna run away from you... sounds like the sort of song Rick would have done. A shuffle. Its alright.
Backbone, the irony its so weak. It has so little back bone. Again what were they thinking with those backing vocals.
Better take care... awful
Falling off the world, not good and the keyboards, oh my.
Get out of my head. Its alright, might be a grower.
Running out of time....wish it was shorter, much shorter.
Crazy, crazy Oh dear, Francis does love country, shame he is so poor at it.
Face the music... its alright Decent solo.
I am sure, I will be told its the best thing they have done in years. That may be so but does that not reflect on the music they have recorded.
Not for me 2/5 Suspect it will be like so many albums, will be told how good it is, when it comes out then as time passes they feel less positive about it. For me. I will file it away. File under, Status Quo.

Well, I am mostly a fan of 70-81, with a few albums I enjoy after (UTI, QPQ)... and Backbone ! I really enjoy the album quite a bit ! Maybe it's cos in places it reminds me of NTL and 1982 and little bits here and there of UTI and QPQ. I think the production is quite good too. I was a bit worried beforehand with Rick being gone and all and having been put off completely of them since Bula Quo... but this album is much more then I had dared to hope for !
Waiting for a woman: Strange as an album opener but enjoy it quite a bit and like the laid back and bluesy feel of it. Reminds me a bit of UTI
Cut me some slack: Really love it and is one of the highlights for me. Just wish they had left the Hu hu background vocals off, but ok, it's not as irritating as some of the background vocals in the eighties were. Reminds me of things on NTL and 1982
Liberty Lane: Another highlight for me, really like the melody and also reminds me of NTL songs
I see you're in some trouble: One of my favorites ! Reminds me again very much of NTL songs.
Backing off: A bit different but actually a very good song for me and is one of the highlights for me as well. Love the guitar riff ! Reminds me a bit of QPQ
I wanna run away with you: Good nice shuffle that reminds me strongly of 1982. Just don't like the background vocals in this one.
Better take care: Like this song quite a bit. It's for me another good cover of a John David song and reminds me again of things on 1982
Backbone: Well, this is my least favorite and the only song I don't like much. I really think it's too little variation in the song and especially the "different strokes bit and Huuu Huuuu background vocals put me off in this one.
Falling off the world: One of my favorites on the album. Love the guitar work and the melody. Reminds me of both NTL and 1982.
Get out of my head: Absolute belter and very good debut of Richie Malone as a lead vocalist. Love the harmony in the second verse together with Francis. Reminds me of things on QPQ.
Running out of time: Very nice song for me. I like the harmonies in the chorus very much and like the melody. Reminds me of UTI and also a bit of 1982
Crazy, Crazy: it's ok, it's a bit too Irish country for me but not too irritating, somehow it works in this case. Could have been on UTI I think.
Face the music: One of my absolute favorites ! Love the guitar work and the melody and It reminds me completely of NTL. Also a bit of QPQ
I need to hear the album more the coming days and weeks. But I honestly think it's the best album they have made in eyars and I think it's one of those that I won't get tired off and will become one of my favorite albums and that is much more then I had dared to hope for beforehand. I also think Rick would have enjoyed this album as well.

Without the bias or not of Rick not being on it, I find it hard for anyone to not put this album as the strongest in decades. It has definitely got a real vintage WYW, RAOTW, NTL vibe mixed with modern Quo . It doesn’t sound like a album released in 2019, they have done a good job recreating that vibe on one record which I haven’t heard much, apart from odd times here and there since 1982. If only Quo could have come out with stuff likes this consistently in the last 30 years I think there would have been much less debate and scrutiny from fans.

I suppose the thing is. For us all. You hear what you want to hear.
For those who like it. Great. For those like me who aren’t keen, there are plenty of other alternatives.
I must admit I don’t hear Never too late at all beyond Francis is the main vocalist and some of the backing vocals are an acquired taste.
But in music it’s always thus. Standing on the shoulders of giants.
The bottom line is enjoy or listen to something else.

Sorry but for me are songs like One Man Band, Lucinda, Shine On, Heavy Daze much better than everthing on the new album so I cant see it why this is album should be better than everything since 1982, also Rossi songs like You Never Stop, Solid Gold have more punch.

An excellent album from the modern Quo. Superb contributions from Richie and Leon (in my opinion amongst the strongest of the songs - more from them please!). Richie and Leon have helped move the Quo sound forward... interesting stops/chord sequences/riffs while maintaining the essence of the Quo sound. Sadly some folk find it difficult to listen with an open mind and keep comparing to the earlier band line ups- an unfair comparison in my opinion. That said, many of these tracks would slot in nicely in the live 70s set (e.g. cut me some slack/get out of my head). Congratulations Quo, Rick I bet would approve.

Not what I expected, its better. Major point, there are no howlers on this one for me, which is a far more consistent album than I have come to expect over decades of Quo. It's got something quite 'classy' about it too. It's not 'heavy', not in the least, but it's not bad, not bad at all.
I need more time to digest it, obviously, and time will tell for all of us whether it's a 'grower' or a 'fader', but from a couple of middle of the night spins (sober!), I would say that I can understand why its picking up positive reviews by critics, in a way that I couldn't from the samples. Take for example, Waiting for a Woman - whether it's the right track to open the album or not is a different matter, but I have gone from the sampled view of 'bland, mid-paced plodding Quo-by-numbers', to thinking I was wrong, this is as cool as f*ck....it's got a swagger to it that genuinely reminds me of the old days.
There is one track (despite my liking it quite a bit, after an initial 'WTF is this, line dancing?'....to....'oh, yeah, I get it') which is perilously close to a very famous Southern American Rock song, but that I know I am going to enjoy listening to very loud with my windows down in my Mustang (haw haw).
The downside? is that it's an album of primarily "7s" (out of 10), it doesn't have enough 9s...or 10s, for me. The closest track is "Get out of my Head", unquestionably the best piece on the album, and a solid 8.5. We ask a lot from them don't we, to sound like Quo 'should sound' but not to recycle ROLD or do Quo by numbers, to give us something driving/heavy, exciting and fresh sounding - they nail that request with Get Out of my Head. It's a small sweet spot between commercial/lite and heavy/rock Quo, with material in the former frequently disappointing ( to say the least) right back to the FF days, but this song nestles in that sweet spot perfectly. I have a strong hunch that non-Quo fans with an ear for rock, would like this one.
So, as I say, time will tell, but I am already looking forward to putting it on again in a minute and significantly, I had an instant feeling from my 'musical gut' after hearing the whole album, that I very much hope they do another one, to build on this. And I really really didn't expect to feel that!

I only have the YouTube official sampler to listen to at the moment, and it's barely 10am, so this is really the wrong time to be listening to anything, but I have a cup of tea to work through. Waiting for a woman. I quite like this so far, but then, I am a woman (and I don't do this kind of thing to my man). And sadly, though it's not the whole song, this shows signs of being the Song that is Not Going Anywhere. Cut me Some Slack Quite nice so far. [Deconstruct that sentence ... ] It's based on something else ... Take me Away? Which is one of my favourites, but this isn't one of my favourites. It's just quite nice so far. Liberty Lane. I do like Liberty Lane. I did the first time I heard it, and it stays in the mind. I wouldn't mind hearing this on the radio. I don't think I would dash out and buy it, but I do like it. Some Trouble. Dull but gets better. Backing Off. OK but not sure what it's for. I like the riff. I Wanna Run Away ... what's happened to the vocals? I thought, that isn't Richie is it? Fortunately, not ... It's a bit limp. I don't want to hear this on the radio. Backbone All the right ideas, but not very gripping. They should have gone and studied a real backbone. O sod, they've taken down the diplodocus in the London museum. No excuse, though. Better Take Care. Professional sounding song. The layered vocals don't make it stronger. My reaction to this one right from the start was, it's not as good as it sounds like it should be. Falling off the world. I like this, but then, it's a minor key shuffle, so I would. I like the guitar bits. Get out of my Head. Does not sound like a Quo song. It's not annoying, it has strong bits. I quite like this. If I heard this played by an unknown band, I would say, play it again. Running out of Time. Miscellaneous professonal pop song. I like the non-vocal bits better.
I don't have the "bonus tracks". I know there ARE bonus tracks as it says so in my FTMO mag --- those would be the de luxe cushions? Not on Amazon yet, though elsewhere. Not on YouTube yet. As the Russian stewardess said, "We don't have first class. How do you get into the comfy seats? You pay more." Anyway I haven't heard those yet.
The impression so far is what someone said, mainly 7s, no 9s or 10s. Which means to me that it isn't a great album. I think it's a good album. I found myself th inking, maybe they SHOULD retire Francis, and get another singer in, if he can't get UP TO THE MICROPHONE and make some good use of that voice of his, whichis one of the main reasons I like Quo ... But I admit that I am relying on YouTube at the moment, which isn't really fair. They should like they are trying really hard, but the squib is not really up the arse. I am pretty sure this album will grace my dusty stacks at some point, but it wouldn't if it wasn't a Quo album. I dno't like it as much as I liked, say, Heavy Traffic. The cover is pretty. I like it as a piece of logo artwork, but it looks like a branding job. OK, a good one. But it's not organic, in the old sense. They should have stuck with diplodocus. That is what I call a backbone. A lot of neck at the front, and a whiplash at the other end. So far I don't get that from this album. PS And where is the creative guitar work? Have they skipped the intros? I detect some nice "bits" but no real heads-down guitar mayhem, which is what I thought Quo were for. For example, look at "Take me Away" ... they had the confidence then to start soloing later in the song, and just keep going ... and going ... that's one of the things that made them rock (to me). Perhaps there are hidden gems here that I just haven't got to yet ... are there?
