Thanks to our Dutch friends on their section of the forum and with help of google translate, another positive review. As the last remaining singer / guitarist, Francis Rossi (70) keeps the fire of Status Quo burning. After the death of Rick Parfitt in 2016, it seemed to be over with the British boogie rockers. On Backbone, Rossi brings a freshened up, yet equally exuberantly, boogie version of the band that made repetition its trademark. "Roll Over Lay Down" and "Whatever You Want" echoes make it a typical Status Quo album, complete with "stupid" lyrics (love is a deal you make with a woman) and guitars like steam trains. The swamp rocker "Get Out of my Head" would not be out of place on an album by The Black Keys; the question is who in this case influenced who. With references to the "mad old days" and solos that never last for long, Rossi keeps up the pace, until he finds in "Running out of Time" that the years count. The smoothly interlocking guitars are the best tribute that Rossi could bring to Parfitt. Jan Vollaard NRC Culture Guide www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2019/09/04/status-quo-boogiet-nog-even-uitbundig-a3972055

I love the album, played on the level and backbone on mix and the tracks all sounded brilliant. Dedicated FF fans might disagree as it is today’s Quo but with music it is all a matter of taste. There is not a track I don’t like, some are better than others but I love them all. I think Ritchie fits in perfectly and both of his tracks are brilliant.
Just my opinion and you are welcome to your own

Well, Andy Brook says "It was also the first Quo album that Rossi decided he'd produce solely by himself since 1991's Rock 'til You Drop,". He was forgetting about Thirsty Work. I think this is relevant, because they are so different from one another. Interesting, what he says. Can't read the whole article, unfortunately. Would be cool if those demos were released, to see the process/evolution from demo->final song. Thanks for sharing!

Eclipsed magazine have put Backbone on #90 of the best 100 albums from 2019. (Whereas ROCKS did not mention it at all in their rundown...)

I still find the logic in releasing an album and then not touring it for a year really strange. But then again that’s Quo for you Cheers
