curiousgirl suggested a thread about Alan's old band The Bombers, post-Quo and post-Party Boys.
I thought i would kick off with a couple of uploads of Bombers b-sides which i consider better than anything that went on their 'lost' album "Aim High".
The first, "Get Up And Get It On", b-side of their 1989 single "Worlds On Fire"....
And the second, "Don't Come Easy", b-side of the 1990 single "Flash In Japan"....
Rock solid!

They were a great live band that played a few Quo songs as well. The second time I saw them John Coghlan was the drummer. At the time it was as a special appearance by John as I gather it wasn’t a permanent role... the band did have a crack at Europe with the record company promising ‘big things’ but it all fell in a heap apparently.

I’m honestly surprised it didn’t happen for them. Thought that at the time. Especially when you saw the likes of ‘ Men at Work ‘ and others breaking over here. But they didn’t have that song like ‘ Down Under ‘ or ‘ Beds are Burning ‘ to start things off. I can’t remember now how long they spent here to try and break through ? Another important factor. It’s s pity it didn’t happen for Alan.

It's quite sad in a way listening to just how good those tracks are and thinking if Alan and Francis's egos hadn't been as big and unyielding in the run up to EOTR then Quo could have gone into the mid 80s with a sound more like this. Acceptable probably to most of the hardcore who instead departed in droves after ITAN.

by the way Gav, what do you mean by ‘lost album’ Aim High? I meant it didn't go where it should have gone. It dropped away and didn't get the push it deserved.

Yes,Tony, when I first saw them live I primarily went because Alan was in the band, but it didn’t take long to realise this band had a wow factor that was a lot more powerful than the average pub band. Alan had his natural aura about him but I was especially impressed with the singer, and the lead guitarist... he reminded me of Angus Young.

Never seen them, so reliant on clips posted on here and you tube. Watched the one with John on bongos , playing Big Fattie which I quite enjoyed. Assumed it was a guest appearance as they had another guy on drums.

The only Bombers stuff I’ve heard is from the compilation CD, Life After Quo, which also contains Party Boys stuff. Don’t Come Easy is on that, and I think it is a crackin’ track, I particularly like the bass line.
Listening here is the first time I’ve heard Get Up & Get It On, really good, better than quite a few of the tracks on the Life After Quo album. I’d say it is closer in style to Quo than the other Bombers material I’ve heard previously.

Here's some of The Bombers. Tyrone coates was a great singer for the band....the 'dental camera' is a bit annoying though.

What i didn't know is that Track 5 on "The Party Boys" album, "Rising Star", was re-recorded by The Bombers with a different melody/lyrics as that b-side "Don't Come Easy".
In all honesty, The Bombers re-write is FAR superior!

Also, can anyone rip me a couple of tracks off Alan's "Life After Quo" album, "Matchstick Men" and "Roadhouse Blues" as hi-res MP3's?
