Favourite drummer? Or best drummer? Rick might have meant he was gutted when Matt left because he was a good mate...always came across as a nice fellow... a good solid bloke, somebody every team needs et etc...I would imagine touring can be a drag when not on stage..so great to have easy going people around. Probably not always a bundle of fun with Mr Rossi on the bus. Just a thought. This? perhaps he was Rick's favourite as a good guy/mate? I think Coghlan is far and away the best drummer (for Quo) and the reunion tours were a reminder of this. He wasn't his former self but he still had (has) that 'something' that the others don't have in terms of the Quo sound. But he famously wasn't an easy guy to be around at times especially when drinking. I imagine Matt was an easier guy to spend time with! and Jeff (according to Patti's book at least) was Rossi's man so that may have also been a factor.

Patty was intimating that Matt brought the best out in Rick in terms of playing- gave him the energy he needed , to paraphrase

J Edwards had been the middle-man in getting Matt the job. Initially Rossi and J Edwards were sweating about it being the right move but Matt dug-in and he was a great asset to Quo, in time, for me. Rick wanted to continue with Alan and John C after the reunions. Clearly a surprise to Francis and not what he was expecting Rick to suggest. I suppose there was a bit of a rift between Rick and Rossi at this point.

AFAIK Matt's reasons for leaving Quo remain a mystery.

I’ve heard one particular piece of info on why Mat left, and it wasn’t to do with his playing ability.
I got this second hand so I can’t vouch that it’s true, but some on here might know. I don’t think he wanted to go.
That aside he been by far the best drummer the band have had since spud left.

Matt is the best post-Jeff - pre-Leon drummer. Not a patch on Jeff at least. Each to their own. Personally I thought Jeff Rich was terrible on record and even worse live, wrong style, that shocking galloping tempo he seemed to bring to everything. Matt was a return to a more metronomic Pete Kircher style and to me changed the whole live dynamic for the better. Leon I had classed as Mr Anonymous, lacking much individual style but having seen him a couple of times this year he really seems to have had something of a renaissance, possibly down to recording new material that he's the original drummer for. Anyway the drum sound was much rockier than in previous years. Yeah, tastes do differ. In my view Jeff was awesome both on record and live. He might have cared less around the time of UTI, when his mind was clearly about to leave, but before that he was a hell of a drummer. No other Quo drummer has been as much inventive and technical as him, his treatments of Caroline, Down Down, SBYBIL, WSOL, Again&Again gave a new life to these songs. His fills were excellent and no other Quo drummer could do them in the same effective way, just listen to songs live endings. Both ML and PK were a boomting sort of drummers, Leon is really growing into what JC used to be (IMHO), but I still miss Jeff whereas the drumming is concerned.

Believe it or not, Porter was the reason. Matt didn‘t get the money he was supposed to earn. A part of his salary was based on how many people attended the shows.... Porter being Porter faked the numbers. Unfortunately, this is no fuckin‘ joke.

Audience related pay ?Never heard of that for a professional musician.Where did you here this information from ?Matt would have been on a fixed salary surely,as an employee of the SQ company?Anyway they only had themselves to blame in dwindling audience numbers, not Matts fault just Porter and Rossi’s self appointed mission to destroy the Quo legacy with cheap stunts and poor studio albums Cheers

Source please.
Also, it was still an income, and I think musicians on stage learn how to count (and how to check official box office figures) pretty quickly, so it would be an utterly pointless thing to do.
