Well I gave the album some hammer today. I don't know why but it should be right up there with my faves of On The Level , Quo and Dog, just on the basis it contains some of my fave live anthems, but it just falls short. Whilst I can appreciate A Reason for Living and Its Better Now , probably more than I did back in the day , I dunno. I can't seem to get it out of my head that the guitars in A Reason for Living sounds like a Sooty and Sweep argument...yeah I know. Still Forty Five Hundred Times, Softer Ride and Caroline sound ace, closely followed by ROLD, although to me this track comes alive, live. BEL is one a lot of people rate , but for some reason has never got me, don't get me wrong it's good , but not in the same class as the other four already mentioned. Claudie hmmmm , sometimes I like it sometimes not, plus ARFL and AIBN , which have grown on me, make this about next best along with Piledriver in my Quo album ratings. Joanne as a bonus track naaa, maybe it's that track which is skewing my ratings?

But since it wasn't on the album originally I wouldn't let it influence my opinion about the album at all, simply would just not play it. Interesting that a lot of people seem to prefer the live version of ROLD. Personally I have always preferred the studio version.

Joanne as a bonus track naaa, maybe it's that track which is skewing my ratings? Joanne has nothing to do with the album. There was a reason they didn't put it there from the beginning, right? One of the reasons that I prefer listening to the vinyl versions is that there ain't no bonus tracks. It can be fun to hear B-side and rarities but I prefer to have them on a separate release. Bonus tracks = uncalled-for tracks.

Agreed...good examples for me are Hard ride, AB Blues, Lonely, Keep me guessing, A reason for Goodbye, Lean Machine, Obstruction day

Totally. My one exception so far is "Lonely Night" on Quo, but I already had that on one of the vinyl B side sets. But it upped the album in my view. Or ears, rather. Having listened to Joanne again, it reduces the album. But all the record companies were doing this.

So an original album for you is neither reduced nor unreduced then but just not the original album anymore by added bonus tracks ?

Slightly off thread, but I am surprised they haven't made an album of the non-album tracks such as Joanne and the like.Any way , it's a bonus track and not on the album proper. Interesting view on ROLD live v Studio version. In a similar vein but opposite to ROLD, I much prefer studio Caroline to live Caroline. All the others work either way for me, but what a rich seam.

I put together the Hello! 'live' album, with tracks taken from the concerts over 40 years, I attended, except for 'Softer Ride' at Montreux

'7. And It's Better Ride' [from when the boys were heavily into horse-riding, obviously giving serious consideration into packing in the whole music lark]
'8. Forty Five Hundread Times' [obviously the extremely rare Jamacian-dub version... well done on rooting out that one. Mon]

Quite simply, in my honest opinion it is Quos best album. It had the lot, the iconic album cover, the poster inside, a classic single, hidden gems (Softer Ride, A Reason For Living and Blue Eyed Lady)and my favourite Quo song Roll Over Lay Down penned by all the band and released as an EP in live form a couple of years later (Not sure where it was recorded though!!). And not forgetting their magnum opus Forty Five Hundred Times, brilliant. If I could change one track it would be And Its Better Now but I guess it showed their softer side, I did like it when they released it as an acoustic single a few years back though. Weird!

Replace ROLD with Caroline and that's exactly my opinion! There's no better album, neither in the Quo catalogue, nor in the world of rock music.

I'm lagging a bit behind on these album threads... for years it used to be my favourite. Not sure if it still is, but certainly up there.
