Summer of '83, a long warm one as a young teenager, I'd inherited a music centre, one that looked exactly like the very beast below, and played Hello! to death. A hugely nostalgic* album for me. * Nostalgia isn't a dirty word. Crevice is a dirty word. We had one of those in the 1970s or something very similar! Yep, I had one of those too !

The Hello! album, was the first Quo album I bought on the day of release and their first album to reach Number 1 in the UK album charts. I wasn't impressed with the cover, but as the saying goes, 'Don't judge A Book By It's Cover' and it was certainly true on this album. What a start, Roll Over Lay Down, no doubt had the foot tapping straight away, to give a treat to the ears with its no nonsense boogie. Claudie is the perfect track to follow the album opener, slowing down the pace a bit. Another headbanging track, A Reason For Living was another instant favorite song. Blue Eyed Lady (after the intro), always reminded me when I first her Paper Plane, in yer face from the opening bar. That track should of been the follow up single to Caroline. Side 2 opens with the current top 5 single Caroline and how can you not like the opening chords from Rick, sadly not to be heard again live. The only problem I had with this, was I preferred the fade on the single rather then the abrupt ending on the album. Softer Ride & And It's Better Now, took a while to get used to, as did Forty-Five Hundred Times, where I used to take the stylus of the Album. It wasn't until they started playing it live during 1975 that I began to like it and now is I my top 5 live tracks. To me this album had a good 'live in the studio' feel to it, but I was surprised that Alan didn't sing in any of the tracks. 9½/10

I started my first job after leaving school in July '73. This was my first music centre, a FIDELITY UA3 costing me nearly 3 weeks wages of £42, in time for the Hello! release.

My copy of Hello! from September 1973
Cool! I got my copy second-hand in the Dandelion Market in Dublin [so that dates this!] but the poster wasn't with it. Probably someone who bought into the image - but not the music! G Btw, gotta say I always LOVED the sleeve [and, of course the Quo sleeve too ]

The quartet of ‘ Caroline, ROLD, BEL, 4500x just made this by far the best of the trilogy of 4 tracks per side albums. And the most successful of the 3. Number 2 in my list of Quo albums.

Tried to screen print this album cover onto a tee shirt when at school. One of the best album covers they did.

Solid album. Roll Over Lay Down is maybe the best opening track they ever recorded. Softer Ride is another favorite. Forty-Five Hundred Times is a great song although it's much better live. And It's Better Now is a little bit boring though. This is at my top 3, close behind Piledriver and Quo.

And I don't think a sexy cover is the answer to why an album sells or doesn't sell because you tell me - the White Album? There was NOTHING on that goddamn cover!
