Are all the albums mostly down to what Rossi wanted the sound of band to be 1986 onwards? Or it just down the production, mixing etc at the time when they were working on the albums etc.
(sorry if a silly question)

He left the band in 84, thinking he knew what was best, what the best direction was for the band and Alan was wrong... For Army and AC, he contributed fuck all. For AC, not much else either. Army is a cover and it was only recorded because Rick was desperate for cash and to avoid the RC suing them, as he had rejected it flat out before. Perfect Remedy is what Francis believed the band should sound like

Perfect Remedy is what Francis believed the band should sound like I've changed your quote slightly because I'm not sure he was keen on the band in general around 84. Without Alan, it obviously became easier to find a middle ground with one less person to argue with. I think ITAN (not so much its successors) benefited from that, as I don't really care for BTB and you can sense they were pulling in all directions at once. As for the sound, it's not something that only applied to Quo. Eric Clapton had an album that was rejected by his label, and they told him the songs he should add and the producers he should use. (Quo had similar interference during AC, as detailed in the new liner notes.) In general, a lot of 60s/70s "veterans" were struggling to fit into the 80s, soundwise. As for PR, he was obviously disappointed at its bad performance, but I find that anybody who's creative should be allowed to make some missteps now and then. When you constantly worry about whether this is what people want to hear, it stops being a personal expression and turns into something else.

I agree but, there are other bands I love and they have changed direction on occasions but, the band as a whole have always been on board. I know that was Francis' original idea, to remain solo and do his own thing but, you can't just lavish an entire record with everything you want if you're in a band.

Dear God, this is the one album I will never buy. Absolute drek with only a couple of redeeming songs.

Perfect Remedy is what Francis believed the band should sound like I think RTYD is more in line with how Francis wanted the band to sound. PR was not properly finished when released, Pip Williams confirmed that on the old board. Interestingly Francis says he still really likes the RTYD album in his book, while Rick hated it.
