Having given them a once over listen and not really getting to the end of any of any of them, I really do believe there is better music out there. It's quite shocking how bad they became. Not my thing at all. Sorry, but if it wasn't for the classic albums this lot would not interest me at all. Shine On is however ok, the rest would have to be growers but not sure I have the patience, time or inclination to listen to them all again to find out.

I think Round and Round could have been a hit if it had been released 10-15 years earlier

For those of us who were loyal throughout the 90's....this album was a big step forward and a welcome break from the covers albums. It was better than some of the dirge we'd had. I think that's why I loved HT so much....SQ were SQ again, or at least quite close. But you had to be along for the crap times to get the best out of the better times!
Think I'm trying to say that I understand why any fan who missed the 90's would be underwhelmed by UTI.

The 90s were Quo's wilderness years and probably dominated by their management schemes.
UTI at least closed the decade with an album that seemed to be from the band co-operative rather than individuals. Then Famous.. messed things up a bit. One of those, 4 tracks are good stuff type of albums, so still along way from the glory album days of old but a bit more convincing in the way Rock Til You Drop had a few worthy tracks.
Rick's 'Little White Lies' is a bit too close, to my ears, to The LA's 'There She Goes' from the early 90s! Though his and Rhino's 'Shine On' is very atmospheric and has something about it and a shame it was eventually dropped from the setlist at the time.
The pub tour had been one of the management's better schemes and can see how it was about reconnecting with their fans at ground level, so to speak.
It was strange to hear that Rick, especially, didn't particularly enjoy the pub gigs. Moaning about the small stages etc, especially when you consider that he had been happy to turn up at times at pubs and clubs to be on stage with John Coghlan's 'Diesel Band'. I had seen him with JC's band at a pub in Fulham Palace Road in the 80s and he seemed to be enjoying the gig.

I don't know this album at all so haven't looked in on this thread so far, but I've really enjoyed reading all of the articulate and 'grown up' reviews ( well apart from Gerh😂), so thanks! I might have to look up the tracks on you tube! Obviously have heard Shine On and liked that and may have previously looked up one or two others after mb comments but don't really remember them!

Sorry, but the thoughts of anything with Jeff Rich gives me weak bladder! (I parked 'articulate' for that, ahem... review - I promise I'll be in full Shakespeare mode henceforth!)

I thought the album was pretty good on release, certainly miles better than the proceeding release of originals, Thirsty Work, which I think is probably the worst thing the band has released post Spare Parts. My hopes for it were a bit mixed going in, obviously TW was awful, and I thought Don’t Stop had a few merits as a nice throw-away collection of covers. While the preceding single, The Way It Goes I thought was just a derivative sub standard re-write of Caroline, but the b-side with clips of album tracks sounded a lot more promising. Stand out tracks for me were Round & Round and Makin’ Waves, still think they are great to this day, really like the instrumental break in Round & Round. While the title track and Shine On are really solid tunes, and a bit different from normal Quo fare. I really like the lone cover, Not Fade Away, particularly the lead breaks and feel it is better than anything on Don’t Stop. While Twenty Wild Horses is okay, I felt Keep ‘Em Coming and Roll the Dice tried a bit too hard to convince people they could still rock and are just a bit mediocre. They are though, for me, streets ahead of Blessed are the Meek, which I just find completely unlistenable, horrible song. But overall I really enjoyed the album, and it gave me great hopes for the future, both in the studio and live. Unfortunately these hopes weren’t really fulfilled, but that is another story. What I will say though that I thought the presentation and promotion of the album was rather lacking. The pub gigs were a great idea, and I’d imagine would have been great to attend. Why they didn’t stick a few cameras at one and release a real in your face video afterwards is beyond me. But where I really feel they got it wrong was with the choice of singles and the artwork. The original artwork that was used on the re-release a few years later was much better and they really should have stood up to Walker and told him to use it. While the choice of singles I felt let them down, to be honest I’d have used The Way it Goes as a b-side and not even included it on an album let alone released it as the first single. I’d have gone for Makin Waves, then Round and Round, followed by Little White Lies as third single. I'm pretty sure they had camera's at every one of those gigs, just nothing released from them, yet. Im pretty sure there's enough footage to make a documentary about the pub gigs Cheers

Unfortunately management used The Sun for the "Get Quo down your boozer" campaign. This switched me off, although the gigs must have been a blast to any fan that managed to get in.
Since listening to the album the other day, I've had 20WH going round my head! Francis does know how to write infectious melody, and I may not like them much without a rocking sound, but his tunes can still get into your head.
Suspect I'll listen to this album again in 3/4 years when it's the turn of UTI in album of the month !

Out of interest, are the pubs they played in, still on the go and which pubs were they? I'll have a look to see if I can find out unless anyone else already knows.

There were 10 pubs on the UK leg of the tour. The list below is of the ones now closed down but rest are still open. Some a long standing music venues too. The Ruskin Arm, East London - gone. Had an interesting musical history though. ruskinarms.com/index.htmlThe Market Hotel, Retford - gone. The Hollybush and Garter, Skelton, Cleveland - gone. The Duchess, Leeds - gone. secretleeds.com/viewtopic.php?t=275

"the "Under The Influence Pub Tour" dates were announced in The Sun newspaper on Friday March 12th. Their competition received some 10,523 entries, so these entries were split into regions of the UK in order that as many areas would be covered as possible, and pubs on the shortlist were considered according to their suitability for the gigs. Quo are due to play a 60 minute set commencing at 8:00pm at each of the lucky pubs. The first of Quo's ten pub gigs turned into more of a daylong event than a gig, both for the band and the lucky few at the pub. Early arrival at this large East End pub was rewarded by some unusual access to Quo promotion. First off, Quo arrived at about 3pm - in ubiquitous stretch white limo, make no mistake, the rock stars had arrived in East Ham!"
