Yep, I know it's not everyone's favorite but all albums will get a chance I will add my thoughts later on in the thread. I hope it will be another pleasant discussion thread. I will open this on February 1

Worst Quo album by a mile, no redeeming features at all, poor songs, terrible production. Strange how we all view things. There’s something I like about it I like. Despite its many faults. I will add to this later. I haven’t played it for years. Maybe that speaks volumes. On to the death deck it goes.

For me it was THE album that gave me some hope back at the time for what direction Quo would go (sadly enough it all would become even worse later). After AC, PR, TW and DS I felt this was at least bringing back some of the Quo that I liked. I like the album quite a bit. It may not be perfect production wise but it's miles and miles better in my eyes then everything they had done from 85 to 97 (except rtyd). Favorites on the album for me are Twenty wild horses, Round and round, Shine which is the best song on the album for me, Blessed are the meek and The way it goes. What I also noticed on this album is that Francis is singing in a lower register then he normally does and I thought it sounded very good. I also prefer the album a lot over HT (i am in the minority with that I know) cos HT sounded too sterile and cold for me. But that I will get back to in another album thread. For me UTI is one of their best albums from the newer period.

I'll give this album a listen tonight as I haven't played it for years, but I could say that with all the albums after Never Too Late.

Favourite Quo Album: On The Level

This one has a lot of good songwriting on it to my ears, don't like all of it, but i think they were definitely trying, and i think it sounds much more of a Quo album than TW, which i found very twee sounding.
Also think it has something over HT, better songwriting maybe. HT was a bit derivative to me. UTI, more variety. The remaster of UTI is a massive improvement. I only wish they'd update HT similarly. Paxman tries to go for separation in the instruments but forgets about any ambience, so Quo's sound is reduced...to sounding like they're playing inside a cardboard box, with all the atmosphere of that.
At least this album marked the end of that horrible 80's production on Jeff Rich's drums. A bit more dexterity as a result, not weighed down by that overbearing drum sound.
I like this album, but couldn't eat a whole one.
Favourite track, Blessed Are The Meek. It flows, maaaaan.

I thought the album was pretty good on release, certainly miles better than the proceeding release of originals, Thirsty Work, which I think is probably the worst thing the band has released post Spare Parts. My hopes for it were a bit mixed going in, obviously TW was awful, and I thought Don’t Stop had a few merits as a nice throw-away collection of covers. While the preceding single, The Way It Goes I thought was just a derivative sub standard re-write of Caroline, but the b-side with clips of album tracks sounded a lot more promising.
Stand out tracks for me were Round & Round and Makin’ Waves, still think they are great to this day, really like the instrumental break in Round & Round. While the title track and Shine On are really solid tunes, and a bit different from normal Quo fare. I really like the lone cover, Not Fade Away, particularly the lead breaks and feel it is better than anything on Don’t Stop. While Twenty Wild Horses is okay, I felt Keep ‘Em Coming and Roll the Dice tried a bit too hard to convince people they could still rock and are just a bit mediocre. They are though, for me, streets ahead of Blessed are the Meek, which I just find completely unlistenable, horrible song.
But overall I really enjoyed the album, and it gave me great hopes for the future, both in the studio and live. Unfortunately these hopes weren’t really fulfilled, but that is another story.
What I will say though that I thought the presentation and promotion of the album was rather lacking. The pub gigs were a great idea, and I’d imagine would have been great to attend. Why they didn’t stick a few cameras at one and release a real in your face video afterwards is beyond me. But where I really feel they got it wrong was with the choice of singles and the artwork. The original artwork that was used on the re-release a few years later was much better and they really should have stood up to Walker and told him to use it. While the choice of singles I felt let them down, to be honest I’d have used The Way it Goes as a b-side and not even included it on an album let alone released it as the first single. I’d have gone for Makin Waves, then Round and Round, followed by Little White Lies as third single.

I found Quo hugely frustrating to follow from Army onwards, and this too was frustrating. Leafleting for album at gigs showed the attractive bent fork cover, only for the band to cave into the manager and go for the tacky pub cover. Already unpopular with the fans by this time, we learned that Not Fade Away was only included at David Walkers insistence. Poor choice of single.
TWH is a good song, albeit that the production is way too light. Then comes the enjoyable title track, where speed doesn't deliver power, but it's still a nice experience. Love the outro. Round and round would have been a good single, and the mid section rocks really nicely. The popular Making Waves isn't so popular with me, but I do like the intro and love the mid section. Others hate it but I really like Roll The Dice, awful verses backed up with a good riff, enjoyable chorus and superb headsdown mid section.
Blessed (to me) is not a SQ song, although I won't deny it's quality. Little me and you is pure Rick, and the quirky number isn't Quo to my ears. Not fade away...yet another cover was unwelcome at the time. Now it just feels pointless and doesn't really fit. Do like the b-side Sea Cruise though. Way it goes is boring, Quo by numbers and utterly unremarkable. Velvet Wings?
Of 12 songs, I've been critical of four of them.
Keep em coming and shine on are special songs, the other half of the album is quite enjoyable but nothing special. That said, I don't like Keep em coming as much as I did at the time. I was angry it wasn't the single!
Overall, the album hasn't dated as badly as I thought it would at the time. Overall it's bright and sparky, often enjoyable, and more rocky than the bands imploded image suggested they were capable of. On it's own merits it's not a bad album at all.

Never heard this album till about 10 years ago, only like 3 tracks TWH,UTI and SO. Rest of it is just throwaway Quo really in my opinion.Always thought you could make up one really good album from songs of the past 30 years to represent Quo Lite Cheers

Worst Quo album by a mile, no redeeming features at all, poor songs, terrible production. Absolutely nothing is worse than Aint Complaining - the biggest pile of shite ever to carry the name Status Quo, i dont mind UTI actually it was certainly a step back in the right direction imo

I never heard this album originally when it came out. And I've only heard it in patches, i.e single tracks.
The first two tracks I quite like, I discovered on Francis' solo tour - Twenty Wild Horses and Blessed Are the Meek, back in 2010.
And later Shine On which is pure Rick, once I joined the online Quo community.
But nothing else and not really tempted to explore further.
Enjoy, those who do.
