Favourite Quo Album: On The Level
|
Post by gav on Jan 18, 2019 10:05:00 GMT
Hello! seemed to be going very much in the direction of these raw, brash sonics in terms of production. Quite hard hitting in places. Quo seemed to take it up a notch. Piledriver is quite muffled in comparison!
I think the drum sound has a lot to do with it. And really trebly guitars. All toned down a bit for On The Level. The guitars blend more on that one. Less overdrive.

Best SQ album and best Francis Rossi guitar solos.

I'll get to my thoughts about the album in a minute. First this... I think I know now why I accidently had said that Alan did 5 songs on the album. I have always felt that the album was Alan dominated a bit (which is not wrong, to the contrary, just as it was ok for some albums to be Francis dominated) and with three songs on side 1 of Alan and side 2 of the album starting with an Alan song as well I forgot Break the rules was on side 1 in between the three Alan songs..
As far as my thoughts of the album go: It's without a doubt one of Quo's best albums for me. The power on it is amazing ! The way the album opens with Backwater is just fantastic and when I ehard that the first time I went wild ! It's an album that is in my top three of favorite albums. But: like I have with just about every quo album, there is always one or a couple of songs that don't appeal to me. And although I know I am in the minority with this, the song I could never get into is Drifting away. For some reason it just never appealed to me. Alan does things at certain moments with his voice that I just don't like. Also don;t like the melodies in the song...the solos are good though...
All in all one of the best Quo albums ever made.

Do you remember gatesheadbanger 's 'least liked' series of threads? Even though I still love and rate Drifting Away, it is for me the weakest on the album (although only very slightly and as you say, it is one of the favourites of some fans....)

I wonder how Backwater might have got on as a single? BTR though was the obvious commercial choice

I prefer Backwater to Break The Rules, but I must admit Break The Rules did come across as a radio friendly single.

Compared to other singles from the FF period Breake the Rules stands well. But compared to the other album tracks it's a little bit lame. I still like it though.

Great album but I feel the same about DA. Don’t think the main Riff is anything special. Comparing it to the DTIM Riff !! It Just cries filler to me. Amazed it ended up as a B side. Backwater would have been a much better choice. BTR was an obvious choice as a single. Backwater would have sold but not as much as BTR did as it was more commercial sounding to achieve the crossover sales. Still a cracking album though.

Despite a new extensive search still cannot find any footage of Break The Rules as a single. Would love to see it if there is any?

I love, love, love Break the Rules. And its partly 'cos I love the honky tonk piano. It was a sound I was already familiar with. I could relax and enjoy it.
I think Backwater is far more original and wonderful but sadly, I doubt it would be as popular to the non-Quo fan. I'm would do well in a pure rock audience.
Also love Drifting Away for its passion and anger.
No duds on this album for me. Not one skipper! 1st class.

I’ve always imagined it played in some smokey pub full of rockers back in the day.

The 'B' side, Lonely Night, was also popular down on the coast.

I recall years ago (I posted this on the first board) that while waiting in a gas station parking lot in my uh hum, van, I was playing Backwater quite loud when a guy with no front teeth (not sure I had to mention that), came up to my window and asked "isn't that from the album with heads growing out from roots"? Kinda made my day that did.
