Having heard it (and played it) over last 35 years, it should be obvious The Mexican Hatdance was about a minutes fun in a jammed 20 minute live song, not the main melody

On the Glasgow live album, the general silly-ness in Roadhouse Blues goes on for much more than a minute in the 14 minute recording. The Mexican Hat Dance jig even gets a reprise!
What does it all mean?...I don't know really.

The reviewer has mis understood, it IS the old tune, it's not that different from CAROLINE, it just sounds a whole lot different. I thought it was like a cut down version of Hold You Back when I first heard it, without the good guitar bits. Then I heard it came out of Andy's little girl's school music book, and it all made sense.

I prefer a lot of the other singles on the reviewers list to Burning Bridges. Never liked it and doubt I ever will. Never bounced up and down to it either. Only heard it live once at Dalby Forest on one of their woodland gigs. Turned my back towards the sky.

I love BB and always have....don't care who knows. Many songs from that era have aged horribly, and BB's production is challenging....but it's so infectious and uplifting that I can forgive all ills. Plus I was a Quo-obsessed teenager when it came out....and 'my band' was in the top 5.

Personally I don't like the song at all but if you do there is nothing wrong with that at all

It's not The Mexican Hat Dance.... Sounds like a mix up/hybrid of the 'Irish Washerwoman' and 'The Mexican Hat Dance' to me! What do you think it is? It's the Irish Washerwoman. I think the Mexican Hat Dance was added later. Not sure when but it's on EOTR. I don't hear any mix or hybrid of the two on Live. I agree though that it does sort of trivialise the song. It's funny but for me, the Irish Washerwoman jig was an acceptable bit of fun in the song but then the Mexican Hat Dance went a step to far. Perhaps 'Panto Quo' started a lot earlier than some of us realised! I called out for the jig at the reunions but in retrospect maybe the song was better without it? As for BB, it passed me by at the time it was released. It doesn't offend me as much as some other songs from that period and I admit to jumping and singing along to it at concerts. Hell I've even sung along to ITAN and I've always hated that.

Hell I've even sung along to ITAN and I've always hated that. We clearly hear different things Viv! Whatever Quo are doing with the tune, on the live album it sounds as much like the Mexican Hat Dance as it does the Irish Washerwoman to me, even if the intention was the latter at that point in time. There have been many variations of both tunes out there, especially in Ireland and Mexico! It will always be the Mexican Hat Dance to me!! Personally don't mind a good jig and you are right it does sort of trivialise things but it seems to suit the true Quo personality in a sense, especially in the longer tracks on stage. The set-lists that lasted for 2 and a half hours in the past could take it. They even did a short rendition of 'Shaking All Over' in Roadhouse on the live album which surprised me at the time. Though not too hard to see how they moved on to medleys and the Batmans later on. I think it was Alan who first thought of Quo trying medleys. Alan being practical rather than not being a purist, as such. The rest of the band resisted the idea at first but not too long after they started to dabble with idea. You hit the nail on the head as to how clearly Quo, even back in the Middle Ages, were not afraid to compromise their image as hard rockers and mess about on stage. It was about that communal spirit at gigs and at one time not knowing exactly what was coming next with their antics. Strange to think they morphed into a band whose gigs rarely had any surprises even when set-list news didn't travel fast, back in time. Obviously BB lacks the general rawness on record and live. The jigs of the FF era and up to '84 had a bit more of an edge even if they were straying dangerously close into panto-land!

It's probably just me Viv! ...I've had tinnitus for years due to playing very loudly in a band in the past and attending too many very loud Quo gigs of the past! Ears used to ring for a couple of days after.

The Mexican Hat Dance can be heard on other versions, for example on Roadhouse medley from Live Alive Quo.
