Talking about the British version from Liverpool and not the band from the USA. I followed the band for a time around 1982. Had their 'Rock 'N' Roll Gypsies' vinyl album.
They were closely associated to Quo in terms of their boogie music and even their looks at one time.
Thought that album was a credible debut though it lacked a bit of a punch, production wise.
Did anyone on this board get to see them or buy their albums? What were your thoughts about them?
They showed promise and supported some top bands including festivals such as Reading.
They seemed to be a band destined for the top but they hit the buffers a few years later on. Was it a case of their undoing happened because they were so close to Quo in style and that ultimately the world didn't need 2 Quo style bands at the same time? This town ain't big enough for the both or us etc...or other reasons why they never made a lasting impression?

I only discovered them a few years back and I really love them! I'm looking to purchase their "Complete Anthology" album in the future. After Quo, Spider are the best hard rock boogie band around - together with Vardis, Hercules and Predatür!

A re-master of Rock N Roll Gypsies would be interesting to hear. There is a video out there... 'Why D'Ya Lie To Me' that clearly demonstrates how influenced they were by Quo. Think the video had been filmed on the 80s TV prog 'Oxford Road Show' in Manchester. A rare tv performance and rubbing shoulders with the New Romantics of the times and maybe explains why they were suddenly a band out of time in the fickle music business?

I've met Col Harkness a couple of times. Nice bloke. Not sure when their website spiderband.co.uk was last updated but there is an biography account on there written by Col Harkness. Funny, funny guy!

I'd not heard of the band before I read this thread but spent a nice afternoon listening to the anthology on spotify, great sounding band with a very Quoish sound but I picked up the odd Slade influence too.

I imagine they studied bands such as Quo and Slade and more besides ...should have been an 'O' Level subject! Possibly listened to the Sounds of the Seventies and the Friday Rock Show, like many of us. They clocked up some mileage in a few years of relentless gigging, up and down the country. Had a quick listen yesterday to their 'Amazin' Grace' part 1 and 2. A Quo tribute before tribute bands became popular?! Though I suppose Quo were doing a tribute to the band 'Gun' and their 'Race with the Devil'!

I saw them supporting Slade at the Birmingham Odeon in 81. They were good , probably one of the best support acts I've seen.
