They really couldn't give a toss about the quality of their 'product' during that period could they? Dull, bland, souless by the numbers pish.

If an album was released titled ‘Status Quo’s Best Of Most Skipped Tracks’ , then I believe this would be on it.

I like it
That's the Trinity...
Roll Over Lay Down (Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster, Coghlan, Young)
Mortified (Rossi, Parfitt, Bown, Edwards, Rich)
Break The Rules (Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster, Coghlan, Young)

Words can't adequately convey just how tragically shite this song is. What is even harder to understand is that Rick had a part in writing such a turd of a song.

Perhaps they were all involved in the writing or perhaps not.
I think it was Colin Johnson who once advised Rossi in particular that it would sometimes be good policy to include other band members in some song credits to keep things sweet.
Which does get me thinking even about Break The rules and Roll Over. Though we know they could come up with stuff through jammin' in studio.
Where songs like Roll Over were admittedly simple they were edgy and had an excitement completely lacking in Mortified.
Pure guesswork, this one sounds like Andy B and possibly Rhino had strong roles to play in the lyrics and structure. They can obviously be good writers but if involved in this, then not their finest 3 minutes or whatever it is.

Isn't this just one of many gutless songs since the early 80s ? and I mean MANY

Yep first time I've ever heard it too. So was it a B-side to Fun Fun Fun? That would explain why I've never heard it, having no interest in buying any of the singles from Don't Stop, or indeed buying the remastered release, which presumably has this on as a 'bonus' track.
It's interesting to listen to out of curiosity, but that's about it.
A quick check on Amazon confirms that it's on there as a bonus track as well as some other songs that I've never heard:
Tilting at the Mill Temporary Friend I'll Never Get Over You
I'll have to listen to these on Spotify...

I find most of the material they churned out in the mid 90's and 00's pretty hard on the ears and very forgettable. This track falls well into that category. The songwriting wagon was well and truly running on empty by then and ready for the scrapyard.

Guess they ALL needed royalty cheques around this time of cover versions, and considering the last album was at least 2 years previously (and mostly Rossi's work) and UTI was 3 years away in the other direction. Talk about a songwriting drought...and the product even then was total guff.

I'll have to listen to these on Spotify... Always liked Tilting at the Mill. The extended solo section is very very good. The song itself is poor. The song is very frustrating, and in so many ways sums up that era of following Quo. I found them one hell of a frustrating band to follow As for Mortified, can't agree it's "Quo by numbers", to me it's a wholly original, quirky thing. And definitely not for me!
