Hadn't heard of them until I read Convention posts here. I then thought they were a Finnish tribute band.
Seems they are....but they've also released an album of "original", self-penned music.
I don't think there's a CD release, but it's available on Spotify and Apple music.
Opening in glorious fashion with "Get it up", the vocal style reminds me of Accept, giving an overall sound of raucous metal meets old Quo. A great rocker, for me slightly spoiled by unnecessary references to Quo songs in the lyrics. This continues throughout the album, making it feel like a tribute. A shame, as this lot strike me as perhaps better than Spider, the closest thing to this band I can think of. The great sound of the opening number doesn't really continue - what follows is a pure old Quo style - a shame, as the more original opening track points the way to what these guys could be capable of.
The other comparison fans will make is with Predatur. Predatur truly are the masters of the mid paced and slower shuffle. As with the classic Quo albums, you find some diversity there, as well as plenty of light and shade. I prefer predatur, although there's some great stuff here.
Sound of Status don't really do light and shade. There's not a ballad here or anything slow. It all rocks. "I left home" sounds more Spider than Quo, but the vast majority of this material is very, very rocking - perhaps a bit one dimensional, but the energy and delivery cannot be denied.
Special mention for "I gotta go". Kicks off like the quiet bit mid way through "No problems", but soon storms into a stunning headbanger with great vocals. As the song builds, the heaviest bits of ROLD are somewhat ripped off, but this listener didn't mind. Must admit, love this song to bits.
It's a shame these talented guys are not UK based. Genuinely think there's a live audience out there for a hard rocking, unpretentious rock band that are steeped in the ways of the old Quo. These guys are good enough to do it, but imo if they want anything they record to be taken seriously, they need to drop the constant Quo references in the songs, and go a little more diverse and original.
A few songs, eg Miss You, sound quite naff, albeit still very Quoish. That said, the albums well worth a bloody good loud listen....and there really are two or three real gems here. Overall, the album is an impressive achievement and I think will prove an enjoyable listen for most fans of the heavy, old Quo. I would definitely go and see this band if they played in the UK.
